Epistle to the Romans: John Murray (#20): Detour-Rom 1.18: τὴν ἀλήθειαν ...

τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἐν ἀδικίᾳ κατεχόντων = suppressing, imprisoning, holding down, proactively repressing the truth in unrighteousness (Rom.1.18).

The thumbnail picture is not an exaggeration. This interior, psychiatric, psychological, intellectual, volitional and moral force "suppresses" God's revelation. The sinfulness of the sinful instinct is to obscure, hide and minimize God's speech in natural revelation. Results? Idols of all kinds.
