"Thomas Cranmer:" Jasper Ridley (#19): Ch.4--Archbishop of Canterbury & ...

The gig is up. The jerry-rigged court at Dunstable closes on 28 May 1533. Cranmer's in ex parte communications with Henry and Cromwell. The whole gig is unfolding over days. The judgment has been pre-approved. All is rigged and pre-planned. Catherine is out. Anne's marriage to Henry is validated (married 5 months before while married to Catherine). Anne's in as the Queen.

How's that for about 20 days from May 10 to Jun 1, 1533. We're talkin' about "presto" action. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, fellas. Good job!

Never mind that Tom will "invalidate" the Henry-Anne marriage 3 years later. Never mind that Tom knew the canonists were aware of the inherent legal problems in 1533. Tom is on Henry's short leash and doing Henry's biddings like a lap dog. "C'mere Tom! Thatta boy!"

We love Tom, but we're not cloaking his failures. Nor are we maximizing them. Nor are we under-appreciating the behemoth of challenges that faced him. Keep buckled-up, 1533 has more to come. Soon enough, Elizabeth 1 will be born and baptized in September 1533. She's a legitimate child, but poor Princess Mary is a bastard. Commoners understood things as did the Continental and Papal courts. Jerry-rigged by Junker Henry.

Onwards to the ROYAL SUPREMACY! Good times to be had by all (except for More, Fisher and the like)!

God's not sleeping. Providence rolls on infallibly.
