William Whittaker’s “Disputation on Holy Scripture:” Dr. Whittaker surveys poor translations of several verses in the Vulgate, defended by Cardinal Bob Bellarmine, but concurring with Dr. Whittaker by several Romanist thinkers, e.g. Cardinal Cajetan among others. Clearly, textual criticism is on offer--Hebrew OT/Greek NT trumps the Vulgate, thus, by inference, constituting an attack on Trent, Session 6, inter alia.


John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church of England:” Bishop Jewel defangs the imputation that the Reformers and Reformation taught disobedience to Princes and civic magistrates. He ably argues from many historical contexts, “Au contraire.”


“Ante-Nicene Fathers down to 325 AD: in Clement 1, Clement adduces David’s confession of sin as an instance of humility.  Very applicable for 2022.
