Athelgar
(Died AD 990)

Abbot of New Minster, Winchester
Bishop of Selsey
Archbishop of Canterbury
Died: 12th February AD 990

Athelgar was educated at Glastonbury, under the care of St. Dunstan, and entered the Benedictine Monastery founded by St. Aethelwold at Abingdon. He was eventually appointed by him to be Abbot of the New Minster in Winchester. Though strictly observing the Benedictine Rule, Athelgar did not adopt the harsh measures of Aethelwold towards the secular clergy.

He became Bishop of Selsey in AD 980 and, in AD 988, was translated to Canterbury. He died after a brief archiepiscopate of scarcely more than one year.

Edited from G.M. Bevan's "Portraits of the Archbishops of Canterbury" (1908).
