Dr. Mason notes that occasionally there were a few “tiffs” between Crumwell and Cranmer. Cranmer, perhaps too much so, trust Crumwell. This is suggested by Dr. Mason, but he notes that Crumwell largely moved in Cranmer’s reformational direction. But we ask, how far and on what? Crumwell falls and is beheaded on 28 Jul 1540 and Henry marries Catherine Howard the same day. The famous Cranmerian letter to Henry about Crumwell is cited (73ff.). Cranmer faces off with the prebendaries of Canterbury, but Dr. Legh does a round-up investigation successfully. The Gostwick event is put down at Henry’s command. Finally, the Council drafts articles on Dr. Cranmer, but, once again, Henry’s signet ring and a fateful meeting gains security for Cranmer for the remainder of Henry’s reign.
