44-52. (1) Miracles do not and cannot establish articles of faith. (2) Tradition and custom also has no strength in proving an article of faith. (3) “Unwritten verities” is a new term in Dr. Cranmer’s time, as he notes, a term and idea repeated by Tridentists, to wit, allowing themselves to affix Papal authority to any given novelty, doctrine, practice or statement. (Vatican 1 formalized this and reaffirmed Trent with the dual-source of authority.) Dr. Cranmer notes that no one knows what “unwritten verities” might contain. Further, the term appears nowhere in earlier writers. As one has come to expect from this Cambridge Doctor of Divinity, many biblical passages and extensive citations from church doctors are put forward.
